This is the single most important post in the series. RT2 is the reduction that dominates academic, scientific, legal, and technical English: by one estimate, around 70% of all the reductions you'll meet. It's been quietly previewed since the Boot, the reduced relatives of the M5 Zone, and the -ing puzzle, and it's the structure behind the famous false-main-verb trap that breaks most learners. Master RT2 and whole categories of difficult text suddenly open up. Read this one slowly, more than once.
1. What RT2 deletes
In RT1: The Missing "that" Between Two Nouns, RT1 deleted just one word: a relative marker (that/which/whom). RT2 deletes two things at once:
RT2 deletes a relative marker AND a form of be (a Boot word).
Watch the deletion happen:
- Full: The particles which were suspended in the chamber...
- Squeezed: The particles suspended in the chamber...
The words which were (the relative marker which + the Boot word were) have both been deleted. What's left is just suspended in the chamber: sitting right after the noun, with no marker and no be.
This is how English compresses a whole relative clause (which were suspended in the chamber) down to a single post-noun phrase (suspended in the chamber). And this compression is everywhere in academic writing; it's how dense English packs so much description into so few words.
Quick recap: RT2 deletes TWO things: a relative marker AND a form of be. The particles which were suspended... → The particles suspended... (both which and were deleted). This compresses a whole relative clause into a short post-noun phrase.
2. The false main verb trap (why RT2 matters so urgently)
Here is the single most dangerous reading trap in English, and RT2 is the cure. Look at this sentence:
The particles dispersed in the chamber reacted violently.
A learner without RT2 sees dispersed, a past-tense-looking verb, right after particles, and reads it as the main verb: "The particles spread out in the chamber..." Then they hit reacted, another verb!, and the sentence collapses in confusion. "Wait, the particles dispersed AND reacted? What's the main action?"
The problem: dispersed is NOT the main verb. It's an RT2 reduction. Let's run the Boot test (The Boot: The Most Powerful Tool in This Whole Series):
- Is there a Boot word (is/are/was/were) directly before dispersed? Look left: the word before it is particles, NOT a Boot word.
- So dispersed cannot be a finite verb. It's a reduced relative clause: which were dispersed.
Restored: The particles which were dispersed in the chamber reacted violently. Now the structure is crystal clear:
- which were dispersed in the chamber describes the particles
- the REAL main verb is reacted
So the sentence simply means: The particles reacted violently. The dispersed in the chamber just tells us which particles. The Boot saved you from the false main verb trap.
Worth repeating: The "false main verb trap": a participle right after a noun (like dispersed) LOOKS like the main verb but isn't. Run the Boot: no Boot before it → it's RT2 (which were dispersed), not the verb. The real verb comes later (reacted). The particles reacted violently.
3. The four surface forms of RT2
RT2 can leave behind four different kinds of leftover word after the noun. Learn to recognize all four:

So whenever you see a past participle, an -ing word, an adjective, or a to-verb sitting right after a noun (with no Boot before it), suspect RT2. All four are the same reduction, a relative marker + be deleted.
Lock this in: RT2 has four surface forms after a noun: past participle (files stored online), -ing (students waiting outside), adjective (report ready for release), to+verb (procedures to follow). All four = a deleted relative marker + be.
4. The five-step diagnostic (the heart of this post)
Here is the reliable procedure for deciding whether a suspicious word after a noun is RT2. When you see a past participle, -ing, or adjective right after a noun, run these five checks. The first four are "STOP" checks (rule it OUT); if it survives all of them, it's RT2.
Step 1, Check LEFT for a Boot word (is/are/was/were/be/been/being). Is there a Boot word directly before the suspicious word? → YES → it's a normal verb (passive or continuous). STOP, not RT2. (The particles were dispersed = real passive verb.) → NO → continue.
Step 2, Check LEFT for have/has/had. → YES → it's a perfect tense (has dispersed). STOP, not RT2. → NO → continue.
Step 3, Check position: is it BEFORE a noun (between M1 and N)? → YES → it's an M2 adjective (the dispersed particles). STOP, not RT2. → NO (it's AFTER the noun) → continue.
Step 4, Scan for another main verb later in the sentence. → YES → there's a real main verb elsewhere, so this word isn't it. This is RT2. → NO → reconsider; it may be the main verb after all.
Step 5, Conclusion: if it passed Steps 1–3 (no Boot, no perfect, not pre-noun) and there's another main verb later → it's RT2. Restore it.
The two most important checks are Step 1 (the Boot) and Step 4 (another main verb later). Together they almost always settle it: no Boot before it + a real verb later = RT2.
A quick reminder: The 5-step diagnostic: (1) Boot before it? → if yes, STOP (real verb). (2) have/has/had before it? → if yes, STOP (perfect). (3) Before a noun? → if yes, STOP (M2 adjective). (4) Another main verb later? → if yes, it's RT2. The key checks are the Boot (Step 1) and "another verb later" (Step 4).
5. A fully worked walk-through
Let's run the full diagnostic on a real sentence.
The data collected in the study suggest a strong correlation.
Target word: collected (a past participle right after the noun data).
- Step 1, Boot before it? The word before collected is data, not a Boot word. NO. Continue.
- Step 2, have/has/had before it? The word before is data, not a perfect auxiliary. NO. Continue.
- Step 3, Before a noun (M2 position)? collected comes AFTER the noun data, not before it. NO (it's post-noun). Continue.
- Step 4, Another main verb later? Yes, suggest is a finite verb later in the sentence. YES.
- Step 5, Conclusion: collected is RT2.
Restore it: data is non-human → use which; the time frame fits the past → use were. So:
The data which were collected in the study suggest a strong correlation.
Now the structure is unambiguous: which were collected in the study describes the data, and the real main verb is suggest. The sentence means: The data suggest a strong correlation.
Say it again: Worked example, The data collected in the study suggest...: no Boot before collected (Step 1), not perfect (Step 2), after the noun not before (Step 3), and suggest is a later main verb (Step 4) → collected is RT2 → restore which were collected → the real verb is suggest.
6. How to restore: choosing the marker and the "be"
When you restore RT2, you insert [relative marker] + [form of be] between the noun and the leftover word. Two small choices:
Choosing the relative marker (same as RT1, RT1: The Missing "that" Between Two Nouns):
- human → who (the students who were waiting)
- non-human → which (the files which were stored)
- broad fallback → that
Choosing the form of be: match it to the time frame of the main clause:
- present/general frame → is/are (the students who are waiting outside will enter)
- past frame → was/were (the data which were collected supported the theory)
So: the files stored online → (files = non-human, and if the frame is present) → the files which are stored online. You insert the marker and the be, matching them to the noun and the time frame.
Hold onto this: To restore RT2, insert [marker + be]: who (human) / which (non-human) / that; and is/are (present frame) or was/were (past frame). The files stored online → The files which are stored online.
7. The crucial caution: not every post-noun participle is RT2
Be careful, the five-step diagnostic exists precisely because not every word after a noun is RT2. The "STOP" checks (Steps 1–3) catch the cases that look like RT2 but aren't:
- The particles were dispersed. → Boot were before dispersed → real passive verb (Step 1 stops it). NOT RT2.
- The team has finished. → has before finished → perfect tense (Step 2 stops it). NOT RT2.
- the dispersed particles → dispersed is BEFORE the noun → M2 adjective (Step 3 stops it). NOT RT2.
So always run the diagnostic before restoring. The signal "participle after a noun" is your cue to check, not to assume. The Boot (Step 1) is your most important gatekeeper: a Boot word before the participle means it's a real verb, not RT2.
One more time: Not every post-noun participle is RT2! Run the diagnostic first. The STOP checks catch look-alikes: Boot before it = real verb; have/has/had before it = perfect; before the noun = M2 adjective. The Boot is the key gatekeeper.
8. Why RT2 is the master key
I called this the master key; here's why. RT2 isn't just the most common reduction. It's the conceptual foundation for two of the others:
- RT4 (next-but-one post) deletes a subject + be after a linking word: the same "delete the be" logic, in a different spot.
- RT5 deletes a connector + subject + be at a sentence edge: again, the same "delete the be" logic.
So once you truly understand RT2, a participle/adjective with no Boot signals a deleted [marker + be], the same instinct carries you through RT4 and RT5. Three of the six reductions share RT2's core logic. That's why the book says: master RT2, and you're most of the way to mastering the whole system.
