The Master Secret: How English Hides Words (and How You Restore Them)

This is the most powerful section of the whole series, and everything so far has been preparing you for it. Here is the master secret of dense English: it constantly deletes words the reader can recover, to make sentences shorter and tighter. The full structure is still there, just made invisible. These deletions are the Reduction Transformations, there are exactly six, and once you can spot and restore them, the hardest academic, scientific, and legal English becomes readable. This post introduces the system; the next six teach each transformation.


1. The master secret of dense English

Why does academic English feel so much harder than everyday English? Most learners assume it uses different, more difficult grammar. But that's not it. Here's the real secret:

Dense English uses the SAME grammar you already know, but with recoverable words DELETED to make it shorter.

Advanced writers compress their sentences by removing words that the reader can mentally fill back in. The full structure is still there underneath; it's just been made invisible. These compressions are called Reduction Transformations (or "RT" for short).

So a scary academic sentence isn't using mysterious new rules. It's an ordinary sentence (built from the structures you've spent 35 posts learning) with some predictable words squeezed out. Your job as a reader is simply to put the deleted words back, to "un-squeeze" the sentence into its full form. Once you do, it reads as easily as a basic sentence.

Quick recap: The master secret: dense English uses the SAME grammar you know, but with recoverable words DELETED. These deletions are "Reduction Transformations" (RT). Your job is to restore the deleted words, to un-squeeze the sentence.


2. Surface structure and deep structure (remember these?)

Way back in The Structural Mindset: Training Your Eyes to See the Shape, I introduced two words and promised they'd matter later. Now is later. They are:

  • Surface structure = the sentence as it actually appears on the page (possibly squeezed).
  • Deep structure = the full, complete version, with all the deleted words restored.

A Reduction Transformation takes the deep structure (full) and deletes words to produce the surface structure (squeezed):

DEEP structure (full)  →  [delete recoverable words]  →  SURFACE structure (squeezed)

And reading dense English means running this backwards:

SURFACE structure (squeezed)  →  [restore deleted words]  →  DEEP structure (full)  →  understand!

So everything in this section is about one skill: seeing a squeezed surface sentence and restoring its full deep structure. You already practiced the gentlest version of this in Joining Equal Pieces: Coordination, Parallelism, and Deletion (ellipsis: he can swim, and she can [swim] too). Now we systematize it.

Worth repeating: Surface structure = the squeezed printed sentence; deep structure = the full version with deleted words restored. Reading dense English = restoring the deep structure from the surface. You practiced this gently with ellipsis (Joining Equal Pieces: Coordination, Parallelism, and Deletion).


3. The six Reduction Transformations

There are exactly six main types of reduction. Each one deletes a specific, predictable set of words. Here's the complete map (don't worry about memorizing it, each gets its own post):

Notice a pattern: most of these deletions involve a form of be (a Boot word!). RT2, RT4, and RT5 all delete a be. This is why the Boot (The Boot: The Most Powerful Tool in This Whole Series) was the most important tool in the whole series: it's the device that detects when a be is missing where a participle or adjective appears. The Boot finds the gap; the RT fills it.

Lock this in: There are six RTs, each deleting specific words. Most involve deleting a form of be (a Boot word), which is why the Boot (The Boot: The Most Powerful Tool in This Whole Series) is the key tool: it detects the missing be, and the RT restores it.


4. The master principle: when to suspect a reduction

How do you know when a sentence has a hidden reduction? Here's the master principle:

When the surface sentence seems to BREAK the normal formula (S = NP1 + VP), when the main verb seems missing, or a piece looks too short, or a participle sits where you expect a verb, suspect that words have been deleted, and try to restore them.

In other words: when a sentence feels "broken" or doesn't fit the patterns you know, don't panic: assume something has been squeezed out, and restore it. A "broken" surface is almost always a squeezed deep structure.

The general procedure:

  1. Notice the surface seems to break the formula (something's off).
  2. Identify which RT pattern produced it (the next six posts teach the patterns).
  3. Restore the deleted words (the relative marker, the be, the if, the subject, the to, or the that).
  4. Read the full deep structure.
  5. Collapse it back into clean meaning.

A quick reminder: Suspect a reduction when the surface seems to BREAK the formula (missing verb, too-short piece, participle where you expect a verb). Then: identify the RT, restore the deleted words, read the full structure, understand.


5. The decision flowchart (a preview)

The book gives a decision flowchart for diagnosing which RT you're facing. Here it is in plain words, a preview of the next six posts. When a sentence seems broken, ask these questions in order:

  1. Are two noun phrases sitting next to each other, with the main verb coming later?RT1 (restore a deleted object relative marker: that/which/whom).
  2. Is there an -ed/-ing/adjective/to-verb right after a noun, before the main verb?RT2 (restore relative marker + be).
  3. Does the clause begin with an inverted Had/Were/Should?RT3 (restore deleted if).
  4. Is a linking word (if/when/although) followed by something too short to be a clause?RT4 (restore subject + be).
  5. Is an -ing/participle/adjective at the edge of the sentence (start or end)?RT5 (restore connector + subject + be).
  6. Is there a verb + noun + verb pattern, or a clause right after a reporting verb with no that?RT6 (restore to or that).

Don't try to absorb all six at once. Each one gets a full post with lots of practice. For now, just see the shape of the system: six questions, six restorations.

Say it again: The flowchart asks six questions in order, each pointing to one RT and one restoration. Two adjacent NPs → RT1. Participle after a noun → RT2. Inverted Had/Were/Should → RT3. Linking word + short piece → RT4. Participle at the edge → RT5. V+NP+V or clause after a reporting verb → RT6.


6. RT2 is the master key (learn it best)

One more crucial point before we begin. Of the six, RT2 is by far the most common, by a wide margin. A rough estimate: about 70% of all reductions in dense academic English are RT2. When you open a scientific paper or a legal document, almost every third sentence contains an RT2.

Here's RT2's power in one example:

The thermal energy dispersed in the chamber can be directed toward the sensor.

A reader without RT2 sees dispersed and reads it as the main verb (past tense): "The thermal energy spread out in the chamber...", and the sentence falls apart. But dispersed is not the main verb! Run the Boot (The Boot: The Most Powerful Tool in This Whole Series): no Boot word before dispersed, and it sits right after the noun energy. So it's an RT2 reduction of which was dispersed. The real main verb is can be directed.

RT2 is not only the most common; it's the conceptual gateway: once you understand that a participle right after a noun (with no Boot) signals a deleted [relative marker + be], the same logic helps you with RT4 and RT5 too. Master RT2, and you're most of the way to mastering five of the six.

So as we go through the next six posts, give RT2 (RT2: The Master Key to Reading Dense English) special attention.

Hold onto this: RT2 is by far the most common reduction (~70% of all RTs in academic English) and the conceptual gateway to the others. The thermal energy dispersed in the chamber can be directed...: dispersed is RT2 (= which was dispersed), not the main verb. Master RT2 above all.

8. See how you do

These exercises just build the mindset. Don't worry about naming the exact RT yet, that comes in the next posts. For now, practice noticing when a sentence is "squeezed" and finding the real main verb.

Exercise A, Is this sentence "squeezed"? Find the real main verb.

For each, find the REAL main verb (the participle or short piece is often NOT it).

  1. The data collected last year support the theory.
  2. The students waiting outside entered the hall.
  3. The bridge connecting the two towns collapsed.

Exercise B, Restore the deleted words (gentle)

Each sentence has a hidden [which/who + be]. Restore it.

  1. The report written yesterday was long. → The report ___ written yesterday was long.
  2. The car parked outside is mine. → The car ___ parked outside is mine.

Exercise C: Surface or deep?

For each, say whether it's the SURFACE (squeezed) or DEEP (full) version.

  1. The samples stored in the freezer were tested.
  2. The samples that were stored in the freezer were tested.

Exercise D, Spot the "break"

In each, what makes the sentence seem to "break" the normal formula (and hint at a reduction)?

  1. The particles dispersed in the chamber reacted violently.
  2. Had I known, I would have called.

Exercise A, Find the real main verb:

  1. support (collected last year describes the data; it's reduced; the real verb is support)
  2. entered (waiting outside describes the students; real verb is entered)
  3. collapsed (connecting the two towns describes the bridge; real verb is collapsed)

  1. The report which was written yesterday was long.
  2. The car which is parked outside is mine.

  1. Surface (squeezed, stored has no which was before it)

  1. dispersed sits right after the noun particles with no Boot before it; it looks like a verb but the real verb (reacted) comes later. (This is RT2.)
  2. The sentence starts with an inverted Had I: there's no if, and the order is flipped like a question, but it's not a question. (This is RT3.)

You've just learned the master secret of dense English: it's not harder grammar, it's the same grammar with words squeezed out, and your job is simply to put them back. That single insight transforms how intimidating academic and technical writing feels. And you've seen that this whole section is where everything you've learned converges.
