For the whole series you've taken sentences apart to read them. Now we reverse the process and build them, layer by layer, through ordered structural choices. Instead of hoping a good sentence appears in your head, you'll construct one on purpose: starting from a simple core, adding detail outward, then deciding how much to compress. That gives you precise control over your own writing, from plain to dense. It's the productive twin of everything you've learned.


1. The idea: build, don't guess

Most people write by intuition: they wait for a sentence to form in their head, then write it down. That works for simple sentences, but it fails for complex ones: the sentence comes out tangled, or they can't make it say exactly what they mean.

This method does something different:

Build a sentence the way you'd assemble a machine, layer by layer, by deliberate decisions, rather than hoping a finished sentence appears in your head.

You start with a simple core (subject + verb + object), then add detail one layer at a time: expand the noun phrases, add describing clauses, add adverbs, and finally decide how much to compress. At each step, you make a choice. The result is a sentence you fully control, and one you can always take back apart, because you built it from known pieces.

2. The generation algorithm (the 8 steps)

Here is the step-by-step procedure for building any sentence:

Step 1, Choose a skeleton (the clause frame: V1, V2, V3, etc., How Verbs Choose What Comes After Them (Verb Valency)). Step 2: Choose the main verb and its valency (does it need 0, 1, or 2 objects?). Step 3, Build NP1 (the subject noun phrase). Step 4, Add NP2 and NP3 if the verb requires them (the objects). Step 5, Expand each noun phrase left to right: M1 → M2 → M3 → N (Building Bigger "Thing" Teams: The M1 Zone (the Front Words), The M2 Zone: Describing Words (and a Secret Connection to the Boot), and The M3 Zone: When a Noun Describes Another Noun). Step 6, Add post-modifiers: M4 (The M4 Zone: Describing a Noun From Behind), then M5 (The M5 Zone: Full Describing Clauses (a Major Milestone)). Step 7: Add adverbs or adverbial clauses (Describing the Action: Adverbs and Adverbial Clauses and Where Do Adverbs Go? The Three Positions). Notice that this algorithm is just your reading knowledge, run in reverse. You know all eight steps already, now you're using them to construct rather than to analyze.

Worth repeating: The 8 steps: (1) choose a skeleton, (2) choose the verb + valency, (3) build the subject NP1, (4) add objects NP2/NP3, (5) expand each NP (M1→M2→M3→N), (6) add post-modifiers (M4, M5), (7) add adverbials, (8) decide whether to compress. It's reading knowledge in reverse.


3. A full worked build

Let's build a sentence from scratch, step by step.

Step 1, Choose a skeleton: Let's use V2 (transitive: subject + verb + object).

Step 2, Choose the verb and valency: verb = examined (V2, needs one object).

Step 3, Build NP1 (subject): start simple, engineers.

Step 4, Add the object (NP2): the turbine.

  • So far: Engineers examined the turbine. (the simple core!)

Step 5, Expand the noun phrases (M1→M2→M3→N):

  • Expand NP1: The senior engineers (M1 the + M2 senior + N engineers).
  • So far: The senior engineers examined the turbine.

Step 6: Add post-modifiers (M4, M5):

  • Add M4 to NP1: The senior engineers from the northern plant (a prepositional phrase).
  • Add M5 to NP2: the turbine that had failed (a relative clause).
  • So far: The senior engineers from the northern plant examined the turbine that had failed.

Step 7, Add adverbials:

  • Add a time adverbial: after the inspection.
  • So far: The senior engineers from the northern plant examined the turbine that had failed after the inspection.

Step 8, Decide whether to compress:

  • We could reduce the M5 relative clause that had failed using RT2 → the failed turbine (moving it to M2), OR keep the full form. We choose based on how dense we want it.

So from a simple core (Engineers examined the turbine), we built a full, sophisticated sentence by deliberate layers, and we control exactly how dense it is. That's the power of generation.

Lock this in: Build outward from a core: Engineers examined the turbine → expand subject (The senior engineers from the northern plant) → add a relative clause to the object (that had failed) → add an adverbial (after the inspection) → optionally compress. Each layer is a deliberate choice.


4. The generation paths (different ways to grow a sentence)

You don't have to use every step every time. The book describes several "generation paths", different ways to grow a sentence depending on what you need:

So you pick the path(s) that match your goal. Writing for a general reader? Use minimal or lightly expanded paths. Writing dense academic prose? Use relative expansion + compression. The same content can be dialed up or down by which paths you apply.

A quick reminder: Generation paths: minimal (core only), expanded NP (richer subject/object), relative expansion (add M5), adverbial layering (add time/reason), passive conversion (flip perspective), safe compression (reduce). Pick paths to match your goal and desired density.


5. The rule of safe compression (very important)

Here's the most important rule for the last step (compression):

Only compress (reduce) when the deleted material is still recoverable by structure. If a reader couldn't restore the full form, don't compress yet.

In other words: you can apply an RT to make a sentence denser, but ONLY if the result is still unambiguous and restorable. The test is simple:

Can you expand the reduced sentence back into its full form? If yes, the compression is safe. If no (it becomes ambiguous or unclear), don't compress.

For example:

  • Full: The chemicals which were stored in sealed containers were tested yesterday.
  • Compressed (RT2): The chemicals stored in sealed containers were tested yesterday. ✓, still clear and restorable. Safe.

But if compressing would create a dangling modifier (RT5: The Participle at the Sentence's Edge (and the Dangling Trap)) or a confusing ambiguity (When a Sentence Has Two Structures: Ambiguity), don't do it. Reduce only when it stays clear.

This is the writer's version of the reader's RT skill: you delete recoverable words, but you make sure they're truly recoverable.

Say it again: The rule of safe compression: only reduce when the deleted material is still recoverable by structure. Test: can you expand it back to the full form clearly? If yes, compress; if it becomes ambiguous or dangling, don't.


6. Controlling density for your audience

Putting it all together: generation gives you a density dial. The same idea can be written at different densities for different readers:

Minimal (for a general reader):

The engineer designed the device. She had studied in Germany.

Expanded (clear, detailed):

The engineer who had studied in Germany designed the device.

Compressed (dense, academic):

The engineer trained in Germany designed the device.

All three say the same thing, but the first is simple, the second is detailed, and the third is dense. You choose based on your audience. A textbook for beginners uses the first; a research paper uses the third. This control is what separates a skilled writer from a guessing one.

Hold onto this: Generation gives you a density dial. Same idea, three densities: minimal (The engineer designed it; she studied in Germany), expanded (The engineer who had studied in Germany...), compressed (The engineer trained in Germany...). Choose based on your audience.


7. Why this helps your reading

This post is the productive mirror of the entire series. Every step of the generation algorithm uses a skill you learned for reading:

So generation isn't new knowledge: it's all your reading knowledge, run backward to build instead of analyze. And the "safe compression" rule is the RT skill from the writer's side: you delete only what's recoverable.

The deep insight: reading and writing are the same structural system, used in opposite directions. You take sentences apart by finding their structure; you build sentences by assembling that same structure. Mastering one strengthens the other.

Exercise A, Build by layers

Start with the core The team completed the test. Apply these layers one at a time:

  1. Expand the subject with M1 + M2 (add "the research" before team).
  2. Add an M5 relative clause to "test" (that had been delayed).
  3. Add a time adverbial (last week).

Exercise B, Identify the generation path

Name the path used (minimal / expanded NP / relative expansion / adverbial layering / passive conversion / safe compression).

  1. The student passed the exam.
  2. The motivated student from Ankara passed the final exam.

Exercise C, Safe compression: is it safe?

For each, decide if compressing is safe (the full form is recoverable) or unsafe (it becomes ambiguous/dangling).

  1. Full: The chemicals which were stored in containers were tested. → Compressed: The chemicals stored in containers were tested.
  2. Full: While I was walking home, the rain started. → Compressed: Walking home, the rain started.

Exercise D, Control the density

Write the idea "The analyst wrote the summary; the analyst had reviewed the data" at three densities: minimal, expanded (with M5), and compressed (with RT2).

Exercise A, Build by layers:

  1. The research team completed the test. (M1 The + M2/M3 research + N team)
  2. The research team completed the test that had been delayed. (M5 relative clause on test)
  3. The research team completed the test that had been delayed last week. (time adverbial)

Exercise B, Identify the generation path:

  1. minimal (core only)
  2. expanded NP (richer subject and object)
  3. relative expansion (added M5)
  4. passive conversion (flipped to passive)
  5. safe compression (reduced the relative clause via RT2)

Exercise C, Safe compression:

  1. Safe, The chemicals stored in containers were tested is clear and restorable (= which were stored). ✓
  2. Unsafe: Walking home, the rain started creates a dangling modifier (the rain can't walk!). Don't compress this way.

Exercise D, Control the density:

  • minimal: The analyst wrote the summary. The analyst had reviewed the data. (or ...; he had reviewed the data.)
  • expanded (M5): The analyst who had reviewed the data wrote the summary.
  • compressed (RT2): The analyst trained in data review wrote the summary. (or The analyst, having reviewed the data, wrote the summary.)

How did you do? Exercise C (safe compression) and Exercise D (density control) are the two key skills. If you got them, you can now build sentences at any density you choose, the mark of a sophisticated writer.
